vs. San Antonio Rampage
at the Bradley Center
A pitifully small crowd witnessed another Admirals win as the team upped their record to 6-0-1-0.

The lineup remained much the same as in recent days with the exception of an MIA Darren Haydar. It's my best guess that he was suspended by the league for his game misconduct in Saturday night's game when he was ejected for physical abuse of the official after he swatted a puck towards the ref after a delayed penalty was whistled. As of tonight, no official word can be found concerning his absence.

The Rampage brought a .500 record into the game, but I feel they are a better club with several early NHL draft pick prospects on their roster. One player I watched closely was Jay Bouwmeester, who was on the NHL All-Rookie team two seasons ago and has a promising future to become an NHL star.

Milwaukee controlled the neutral zone for most of the game, preventing the Rampage from organizing any threat on Brian Finley, but the Admirals had problems creating opportunities to set up plays around San Antonio's suffocating defense. Rampage goalie Travis Scott made several glove saves, almost as if that's the only area of the net the Admirals were aiming for.

After 20 minutes, the Admirals outshot San Antonio 18-4 and held a 1-0 lead after a power play goal by Simon Gamache. Outside of some sloppy calls and non-calls by the linesmen and another inconsistent game by my least favorite referee Justin St. Pierre, not much happened for a period and a half.

Stephen Weiss tied the game for San Antonio by firing a puck over Finley's blocker with 6:40 remaining in regulation. The Admirals played defensively in the final minutes to gain the point by getting to overtime.

The overtime period featured Simon Gamache doing two things that make me pull my hair out. Early in the overtime period, Gamache lost his stick deep in the San Antonio zone just as the puck was coming back down the ice towards Brian Finley. Instead of leaving it and skating to the bench for another stick or to substitute another player, he skated back to pick up his stick, allowing the Rampage to get a man advantage in our zone. Later in the overtime, San Antonio had a flurry of opportunities in front of Milwaukee's net... and where was Simon? ... he was at center ice being a 'cherry picker'. Four-on-four hockey (as is the format for overtime) is NOT the time to cherry pick!

Luckily for the small home crowd, Dan Hamhuis swatted at a loose puck just outside of the crease to clear the zone, right where Gamache was waiting for it to get a breakaway. He outskated the retreating Rampage defense and buried his shot past Scott.
