vs. Grand Rapids Griffins
Preseason game at Wilson Park in Milwaukee
|
The Admirals kept up a decent preseason showing by earning a 3-1 victory over the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The team dressed 15 players from the system and 5 tryout players. Seamus Kotyk started the game in goal and was swapped for Brian Finley midway in the 2nd period. On defense, Dan Hamhuis, Brad Tiley, and Greg Zanon were joined by tryouts Tyler Hanchuck, Mike Matteucci, and P.J. Martin. Tryout forwards J.C. Ruid and Jean-Francois Dufour were joined by Darren Haydar, Simon Gamache, Paul Brown, Timofei Shishkanov, Wyatt Smith, Scottie Upshall, Jordin Tootoo, Jeremy Yablonski, Libor Pivko, and Tony Hrkac.
Scottie Upshall had two goals and Simon Gamache another in a game that saw the team get a comfortable lead, then fall into a lull where they didn't press as hard. The Griffins didn't get many scoring chances, but Jiri Hudler capitalized on a sloppy turnover at the blue line to end the shutout bid by Kotyk/Finley.

Notes
- This was my first time to see Jordin Tootoo play in person. He seemed to live up to all expectations by playing a very physical game
- Coach Noel was back behind the bench with assistant Todd Richards
- The new rule keeping the goalies from playing the puck in the corners either was not being enforced, or was a missed call a few times. Kotyk played a puck in the corner in the 2nd period, and Finley was pretty far out of the crease another time. Hopefully these guys can shake their habits before the season starts
- Griffins 'tough' guy Darryl Bootland was tossed from the game in the first period for an intent to injure call when he had an altercation with Tootoo
- Whether by design or not, Gamache was playing the role of "cherry-picker", where he stayed in the neutral zone while his teammates played defense, hoping for a breakaway opportunity. It didn't seem to work very well, and in a few instances, he really should have joined in on the play in front of his own net
- Mike Matteucci had a decent showing in a fight with Peter Vandermeer. He landed some punches before Vandermeer pulled him down on the ice to end it
- Despite reading kudos from the Nashville coaching staff about the play of Dan Hamhuis, I didn't see it. He played a decent game, but made a few bad plays. However, this is the time of the year to get the bad plays out of the way. He'll be good in the long run... chalk this up to having a subpar night
- While the Admirals use regular (used) jerseys in the preseason, the Griffins wore plain white practice jerseys that only had the logo on the front and numbers
