vs. Chicago Wolves
Preseason game at Fond du Lac, WI

The long awaited first hockey game of the season has come and gone, ending a short summer of withdrawal symptoms. Sure, it was only preseason, but this game proved to be fun to watch.

The Admirals suited up 13 players from within the system and 7 tryout players. In goal, Brian Finley played the first half of the game and Seamus Kotyk played the final 30 minutes. The defense was led by Ryan Suter and Kevin Klein, and included tryouts Tyler Hanchuck, Dan Watson, Mike Matteucci, and Les Borsheim. Tryout players Tab Lardner, Phil Lewandowski, and J.C. Ruid played forward positions with Darren Haydar, Paul Brown, Brandon Segal, Scottie Upshall, Jeremy Yablonski, Libor Pivko, Jerred Smithson, Cam Severson, and Vernon Fiddler.

Seeing our defensive lineup made me prepare for a game where we'd get burnt by Chicago's front line, but they were rarely tested. Milwaukee put up three unanswered goals in the first period by Cam Severson, Vernon Fiddler, and Tab Lardner. Jeremy Yablonski (not known for his scoring prowess) added a power play goal in the second period to give the Admirals a 4-0 edge heading into the final period. Kotyk surrendered a goal in the third period, but a goal by J.C. Ruid would make up for it, finishing the game off as a 5-1 victory for Milwaukee.

Notes
- Jeremy Yablonski came into the game with a black eye. Guess he's been challenged in practice sometime this week.
- Free agent signees Cam Severson and Jerred Smithson both impressed me with their effort. I was unsure if they would cut the mustard when I first learned they would be here, but they gave a great first impression.
- Seamus Kotyk was still wearing Cleveland colors. Hopefully he has a new set of pads and a new helmet that he's getting broken in for the regular season. Teal is just too ugly if you ask me.
- Mike Matteucci had a bad game. He made more mistakes than the rest of the team combined.
- Paul Brown's fight was the best of the night, and as usual for preseason games, there were several to watch. Brown was dwarfed by Chicago's 6'9" Lane Manson, but he made up for the height difference with a few nice jabs with his left hand after trying to land a few haymakers with the right.
- The new rules were enforced, and I reaffirm that I am in favor of the automatic icing and touch-up offsides calls. They helped to keep the flow of the game moving.
- Brian Finley looked impressive, but he wasn't threatened too often.
- Former Admirals head coach and current Predators assistant coach, Peter Horachek helped out behind the bench along with Admirals assistant Todd Richards. Head coach Claude Noel was not behind the bench.
- Milwaukee didn't have to see Chicago's top goaltender, Kari Lehtonen. Instead, Michael Garnett played the first 30 minutes and Adam Berkhoel played the final half.
