vs. Utah Grizzlies
at the Bradley Center
Milwaukee entered this game three points behind Chicago for the division lead. Facing the team with the worst record in the league would seem to be good medicine for the Admirals, who suffered a 7-0 blanking in their last game Sunday in Cincinnati. Somehow, the Utah Grizzlies almost were the Bad News Bears for Milwaukee.

Thanks to two great plays by Bryan Lundbohm, the Admirals held a 2-0 lead midway through the first period. The first was a nice centering pass from behind the net to Jerred Smithson who flipped it past Utah goalie David LeNeveu. Lundbohm added a goal minutes later to give the Milwaukee crowd a sense that the game would be in the bag. Not so fast.

The first period was winding down when Utah's Mike Garrow got the Grizzlies on the scoreboard. From where I sat, I had a perfect view of what Garrow saw, and Milwaukee goalie Brian Finley was screened by two players. He took the shot and it found it's way into the net.

Peter White's goal at the end of the second period tied the game and had me worried. The Admirals have given up a few big leads lately... ten days ago a five goal third period lead against Edmonton just about evaporated, and the Ducks scored three goals after a four goal Milwaukee lead last weekend. And this was just a two goal lead that they were blowing.

I hoped the Admirals would come out of the locker room for the third period with a ton of intensity, but instead Utah looked like the hungrier team for much of the third period. Milwaukee would get more scoring chances due to three power plays in the final ten minutes of regulation, but they had trouble setting things up due to the continuing poor play at the blue line with the Hamhuis-Hutchinson pairing.

The Admirals carried part of a power play into the overtime period, resulting in a 4-on-3 power play. Even with only 3 opponents on the ice, Hutch and Hamhuis allowed a Utah scoring chance with their increasingly aggravating incompetence on the power play. It should be to no surprise that seconds after a defensive line change, the Admirals would score to win the game. Unlike H&H, Kevin Klein and Ryan Suter were able to keep the puck in the zone and Klein drew a Utah player out away from the slot, leaving Simon Gamache wide open as Klein took a shot that went wide right and bounced off the endboards directly to Gamache.

Finley recorded his 33rd win of the season despite the fact that he still seemed to be playing shaky, allowing some rebounds that should've been absorbed. Perhaps the confidence gained by getting away with this victory will help him in the near future.

The lowlight of the game came in the first period, when Utah's Mike Lee challenged Cam Severson to a fight. Cam acted like he was going to go, but never dropped the gloves... instead skating away and turtling after Lee went after him. Lee was given an extra 2 minute penalty and a misconduct as both players were sent to the box. On the way to the box, Cam bragged to Lee about how he used his head to give Milwaukee a power play. What Cam did was weak and made me ashamed. As a hockey fighter, if you don't want to fight... you don't. Faking a guy into thinking you wanna go, but not going through with it is spineless. I hope this is an isolated incident for Cam, as he has struck me this season as a smart checking line kind of player.

Milwaukee used 7 defensemen in this game, welcoming back Burke Henry, who was phased into the lineup after breaking his orbital bone over 8 weeks ago. Wyatt Smith and Paul Brown were missing from the lineup, and Brandon Segal returned from a two week stint with Rockford. One of Utah's best players, Jarrod Skalde, was missing from the lineup after breaking his foot recently. And speaking of broken feet, Darren Haydar's seems to be healing well as he expects to return right on schedule in mid-April.
