vs. Grand Rapids Griffins
at the Bradley Center
This was the final game in the team record nine game homestand, and it was an important one if they wanted to keep pace with Chicago in the race for the division title.

Griffins goaltender Joey MacDonald came to play today. Milwaukee outshot the Griffins 47-23, so you'd expect that Milwaukee wouldn't have had much trouble winning this game, but that wasn't the case.

For the third straight game, Milwaukee allowed a goal by the opposing team's least talented player. Tonight it was Peter Vandermeer who was nearly blinded by the light coming through Brian Finley's five hole. A perfect photo of this moment was seen on jsonline.com for those who are curious.

In the Grand Rapids end, there seemed to be a force-field above the blue paint, especially against shots by Wyatt Smith, who had several near-point-blank range opportunities go wide of the net. If the shots didn't go wide, MacDonald was always in position to make the save.

After Griffins captain Blake Sloan gave his team a 2-0 lead early in the second, things looked a little bleak. The only positive was seeing that Chicago was losing in Syracuse on the scoreboard ticker. Milwaukee wouldn't call it quits just yet, as they seemed to solve the mystery of Mickey D, by scoring twice within five minutes of Sloan's goal to tie it up.

Matt Ellis regained the lead for Grand Rapids late in the second period, but Brad Tiley answered minutes later with a power play goal to tie it at 3. Meanwhile, the ticker wasn't so kind as we learned that Chicago came from behind to beat Syracuse 7-6. That meant that Milwaukee would need a win to maintain a tie for first in the division.

Sensing that Finley wasn't on his best game after giving up 3 goals on only 14 shots, he inserted Seamus Kotyk into the game after the second period. We do not normally see goalie changes in tie games, but I firmly agree with coach's decision on this one.

The third period made me rather sick, as it appeared that both teams were leaning back on their heels to send the game to overtime to at least gain a point. Well, that's what happened. And that's all that Milwaukee would get as Grand Rapids scored in overtime after a poor play by Tiley.

End result - Chicago leads the division by a point and the nine game homestand ends at 6-2-1-0.
