vs. Cleveland Barons
at the Bradley Center
Lose the game, lose sole possesion of first place. The Wolves were shutting out Manitoba 90 miles to the south during this game, and Milwaukee held a two point lead over the Wolves entering tonight's action. Both Cleveland and Milwaukee were coming off shutouts, with the Barons taking care of the Rampage in San Antonio the night before.

Cleveland's Nick Bootland scored his 100th pro goal to give the Barons the initial lead, which also ended Brian Finley's shutout streak at 171:35. Grant Stevenson scored on a second period power play to put Milwaukee in a 2 goal hole halfway through regulation.

85 seconds later, Wyatt Smith's power play goal put the Admirals right back into it. Minutes later, Cleveland's Doug Murray scored another power play goal making the score 3-1. 22 seconds later, Scottie Upshall made it a one goal game. In a span of 4:12, the score went from 1-0 to 3-2. Milwaukee only allowed six shots in the second period, but the Barons capitalized on two of them.

The Admirals trailed after 2 periods for only the 15th time this season, the fewest of any AHL team. They were 2-12 in the previous 14 times.

The third period brought out the boos. Upshall was called not once, but twice for five minute high sticking penalties. The second call was made eight seconds after the first penalty expired. Not only did Milwaukee kill off all of the power play time in the third period, but they managed an unlikely geriatric short-handed goal when Tony Hrkac fed Brad Tiley (two of the oldest players in the AHL) for the game tying goal.

Overtime came and went, and the crowd got on their feet for a shootout. Coming into this game, the Admirals were 0-4 in the shootout and only had 3 goals in 19 attempts.

The first round of the shootout was scoreless as both Grant Stevenson and Simon Gamache were denied. After Garrett Stafford was unsuccessful, I had a big WTF moment when Milwaukee used Jordin Tootoo for their second shooter. Wouldn't you know, he scored. Crowd goes wild. Cleveland's Pat Rissmiller rang one off the post, and another WTF moment came about as Milwaukee used defenseman Dan Hamhuis as the third shooter. As expected, he did not score. Marcel Goc couldn't get one past Finley, and it was now up to Wyatt Smith, who found the back of the net to give Milwaukee the come-from-behind victory.

Brandon Segal was scratched for the second straight game, and Vernon Fiddler sat out his second in a row to allow a nagging injury with his foot to heal.
