The Admirals needed a game like this badly. After losing 6 of their last 8 games, I would've bet against them blowing out Houston as easily as they did.
Newly signed center Brendan Yarema made an impact right away by earning an assist on a goal by Simon Gamache in the opening moments of the game. He impressed me all night with how well he worked with his new teammates.
Libor Pivko broke out of a personal slump with a goal midway through the first period to make it 2-0. Minutes later, Cam Severson fought Bill Kinkel, apparently hurting his hand after throwing some ill-advised punches to the top of Kinkel's thick skull. He would play the rest of the game, but was seen with an icepack on it.
Scottie Upshall made it 3-0 with a power play goal in the 2nd period, which was followed up 14 seconds later by rookie Paul Brown's first AHL goal. Brown scored twice on an assignment in the ECHL with Trenton earlier this season, but was scoreless in his first 4 games with Milwaukee prior to the demotion.
Upshall scored again in the third period, but couldn't manage a hat trick. The team now has had 22 instances this season of a player with two goals, but does not have a hat trick. The defensive pairing of Greg Zanon and Kevin Klein were +4 for being on the ice for all of the even strength goals.
Brian Finley held on for the shutout. It was quite a feat in many ways. It was only the third time in franchise history that an Admirals goalie has had back-to-back shutouts (Chris Mason in 2001 & Mark LaForest in 1995). It also set a team record for most shutouts in a season (6, eclipsing Mason's mark of 5), and Finley tied Mason for team career shutouts with 10. His shutout streak stands at 157:52 including the end of the game vs. Utah on March 4th.
