vs. Utah Grizzlies
at the Bradley Center
The Admirals outplayed a determined Utah team, but came up short.

This was the first game after Darren Haydar broke his ankle in practice earlier this week. His 23 goals were good enough to tie for the team lead with Simon Gamache, so his presence will be felt until he returns in mid-April. The team called up Paul Brown a few days ago from his demotion to the ECHL, but he didn't even skate in pregame warmups, making me wonder if he's in the Coach's doghouse.

Milwaukee gave up the first goal of the game on a blunder by Ryan Suter, whose turnover in front of his own net was embarrassing. Utah extended their lead to 2 goals on a power play later in the first period. Two nights prior, the Grizzlies blew a 2 goal lead to Chicago by giving up a short-handed goal with 16 seconds left in the game. I was hoping Milwaukee would duplicate that feat. It began to look possible when Jordin Tootoo scored a power play goal (originally credited to Simon Gamache) late in the first period.

Milwaukee's hope of carrying momentum for a comeback bid were stalled during the worst moment of the game in the closing seconds of the 2nd period, when Scottie Upshall gave Utah a power play simply by not knowing how to keep his mouth shut. After Jerred Smithson was called for slashing during an Admirals power play, Upshall ran his mouth at the referee giving Utah a power play. Moments later when the period ended, Upshall ran his mouth some more earning himself a misconduct penalty. Utah scored on that power play in what would be the game winning goal.

Early in the third period, the Admirals had a chance to close within one with a 4-on-3 power play for about a minute. Down by 2 goals, Coach Noel was playing conservatively by using two defensemen (Hamhuis and Hutchinson) during the 4-on-3, and the Grizzlies killed off that penalty.

Timofei Shishkanov's power play goal with 9 minutes remaining gave the home crowd some hope of an Admirals comeback, but the team couldn't rally, eventually giving up an empty netter in the last second of the game.

Many fans booed referee Dan O'Rourke... who deserved much of it... but the fact remains that key mistakes by the Admirals (Suter & Upshall) lost this game. Last place Utah played better than they normally do, but Milwaukee could easily have prevailed.
