All five goals in this game were scored by Admirals... 'cept that two of them were by ex-Admirals. Fortunately the current Admirals outscored the ex-Admirals 3-2 in an overtime thriller.
A decent sized crowd turned out for this one, thanks to the Admirals using a little T & A to promote the game. Candice Michelle, seen in the godaddy.com Super Bowl commercial, was on hand to sign autographs. She also dropped a ceremonial puck just before the game began and kissed Milwaukee's Vern Fiddler and St. John's Marc Moro on the cheek.
Simon Gamache got the home crowd on their feet early in the first period to give Milwaukee the initial lead with his 23rd goal of the season. Midway through the period, Nathan Perrot tipped in a shot from Regan Kelly to tie it up.
After an evenly played first period, the Admirals turned up the heat, outshooting the Leafs 28-9 in the next 40 minutes. The Leafs resorted to a clutch-and-grab game to try to suffocate the Admirals playmakers, but referee Bob Langdon kept his whistle fairly quiet. Milwaukee managed a fair number of shots, but couldn't get a great scoring opportunity on Leafs goalie Mikael Tellqvist.
Darren Haydar kept up with Gamache in the stats column with his 23rd goal of the year to give the Admirals the lead again in the third period, but the Leafs would tie it up 22 seconds later on a rare goal by Marc Moro, who blasted one from near the blue line while goaltender Brian Finley was having trouble getting back on his skates after falling down.
The game went to overtime, and defenseman Dan Hamhuis proved to be an unlikely hero. He turned on the jets after bringing the puck into the zone and raced toward the goal, firing a perfect top shelf shot from the right side. Hamhuis typically keeps within a few strides of the blue line on the offensive side of the game, so it was a surprise to see him elect to take the puck to the net rather than passing it to a teammate.
Milwaukee swept the season series against the Leafs four games to zero.
