vs. Syracuse Crunch
at the Bradley Center

About forty-five minutes before the game, I noticed Coach Noel having a short conversation with Syracuse coach Gary Agnew, and I could almost read Claude's lips that he didn't want a fight-filled game. Sure enough, the Admirals lineup was missing pugilists Jordin Tootoo and Eric Labelle, who both participated in pregame warmups. Syracuse has been one of the 5 most penalized teams for most of the season due to their roster filled with guys willing to duke it out.
Tempers only flared once in the game, and it hurt Milwaukee. In the second period, Jerred Smithson was cross-checked into the boards, drawing a penalty. Smithson retaliated along with Cam Severson, who was whistled for roughing. End result - Syracuse got the power play instead of Milwaukee.
A few great things came from this game. Claude Noel scrapped his experiment in shuffling up the lines, and used some familiar combinations, including the Haydar-Fiddler-Gamache line. The other thing to celebrate was the shutout streak that spanned more than 2 games. Scottie Upshall's first period goal put that stress to rest.
I was agonizing for awhile during this game on the shot selection by Milwaukee. Syracuse goalie Karl Goehring barely stands taller than the crossbar, and was naturally quick to stop any pucks shot below his knees. There was absolutely no coincidence that the two goals that Milwaukee (Upshall) scored were both top-shelf, yet the bulk of the shots taken on the Syracuse net were on the ice. Speaking of Upshall scoring two goals, that brings the total to 21 times that the team has had a 2 goal scorer while we await our first hat trick of the season.
The game went to overtime and appeared to be heading to a shootout, when Joe Motzko was allowed through the turnstiles of Dan Hamhuis and Andrew Hutchinson to get a free shot on Brian Finley for the game winner.
