vs. Cincinnati Mighty Ducks
at the Bradley Center
Boy, Brian Pochmara really earned his spot in my small list of AHL referees that I despise. Over the past few years, I've been fairly happy with the job the referees have done. One only has to remember the days of the IHL referees which give me the shivers when I think about them now to realize that we've had it pretty good over the past few seasons.

Now before you think I'm blaming the loss on Pochmara... I'm not. At least not completely. The Ducks are excellent at holding on to a lead by reverting to a suffocating neutral zone trap that has stymied the Admirals for a few seasons now. By virtue of a few power play goals that shouldn't have existed in the first place (especially the second one after a phantom slashing call on Greg Zanon), the Ducks went into the locker room with a 3-0 lead and played the rest of the game leaning back on their heels with the focus on defense... allowing more shots on goal, but few quality breakaway opportunities. They did a good job of shutting down the Admirals offense and deserve credit for that. However, the tone of the game would have been much different with normal officiating.

One thing that frustrated me was that Coach Noel continued with his experiment of changing the lines (see yesterday's summary). The lines we've seen almost all season made us a top-5 team in the league, but the Keystone Kops on Ice show this weekend puts us in the class of Utah right about now. Why fix something if it ain't broke?

Those who attended the Ducks last visit to Milwaukee will recall Cincinnati thug Shane O'Brien interacting with a riled up crowd. With the Admirals enforcers banged up, they called up UHL PIM king Eric Labelle from Rockford. Twice Labelle challenged the wuss O'Brien to a fight... but the pansy refused and Pochmara penalized Labelle for roughing each time (along with a misconduct the first time) despite very little physical contact between the two.

Also to note, Cincy goaltender Frederic Cassivi now has nearly 3 consecutive shutouts against Milwaukee (179:35 to be exact). He's shutout Milwaukee the last two games, and only allowed one goal in the opening minute of the game before that. Milwaukee goaltender Brian Finley was relieved after the first period, and Seamus Kotyk did what he needed to do, allowing only a power play goal in the last 40 minutes.

According to the newspaper account of this game, the Admirals haven't been shutout in consecutive home games since 1978. They've been wrong with historical facts before, but this one could very well be true.
