AHL All Star Game
at Manchester's Verizon Wireless Arena
PlanetUSA vs. Canada
In America, this game was shown live on ESPN2, so I'm guessing most of my readers have seen the game, if not taped it. Milwaukee was well-represented at this game with Coach Claude Noel and his staff manning the Team Canada bench with defenseman Brad Tiley named as the captain for Canada. Simon Gamache and Dan Hamhuis also were playing for Canada, and each registered an assist in the game. Andrew Hutchinson was the lone Milwaukee representative for PlanetUSA (non-Canadians). Former Admiral Craig Darby captained the PlanetUSA squad. All 28 AHL teams had at least one representative in the game. Milwaukee's four players was second only to host city Manchester with six (including two injured players who did not participate).
This game began with a lot of scoring at the expense of Chicago Wolves goaltender Kari Lehtonen, who allowed four Canada goals in the first period. Another West Division goaltender got burned pretty bad in the second period, as Grand Rapids netminder Joey MacDonald allowed three goals by PlanetUSA.
With a tie score after 60 minutes, the game skipped the five minute 4-on-4 overtime and went straight to the shootout. PlanetUSA went 3-for-3 in the shootout, while Canada was unsuccessful on three attempts.
PlanetUSA overcame a 4-0 deficit to win 5-4 in a shootout.
