vs. Cincinnati Mighty Ducks
at the Bradley Center
|
You knew something was up with Jordin Tootoo just by how he acted during player introductions. Instead of simply skating up to the blue line when announced, he raced to the blue line and skidded to a brisk stop. Seconds before the open faceoff, Jordin motioned to Cincinnati thug Shane O'Brien that he wanted to fight. O'Brien obliged, and the two fought for seven seconds until the incompetent and clearly unaware referee Francois St. Laurent nearly skated backwards into the fight. Jordin was extra-animated after disposing of O'Brien with an exagerated hand-cleaning gesture. That warmed up the crowd for a game that had several fans and players exchanging pleasantries throughout the evening.
The team had been on a 7 game road trip, so many fans were simply hungry to see a game. This one turned out to be extra satisfying. Coach Noel opted to use backup goalie Seamus Kotyk, who had just returned from a conditioning stint with the Rockford Icehogs. Kotyk only allowed one goal, although another one was disallowed due to an incorrect interference call and a few other shots clanged off the pipes.
Frederic Cassivi has been the hot goalie against Milwaukee lately (119+ consecutive shutout minutes), but the Ducks used Ilya Bryzgalov instead. Bryzgalov was lit up early and replaced in his only start this season against the Admirals.
The Admirals ended up scoring three goals on 5-on-3 power plays and another goal with a man advantage. Jerrod Smithson came out of his shell to score two goals, bringing his season total up to five. It is the 18th time an Admiral player has two goals this season, but the team doesn't have a single hat trick to speak of (outside of a Gordie Howe hat trick by Brandon Segal a few weeks ago). That must be some kind of record.
As I mentioned earlier, St. Laurent was fairly incompetent in this game. A disallowed Ducks goal should have counted as the offending player was pushed into Kotyk by Scottie Upshall. His controversial call against Ryan Suter in the second period was about as bad as it got. Suter slashed a Ducks player (Parenteau?) on the forearm in the neutral zone. He was not only given a questionable five minute major, but he was tossed for the game, leaving the Admirals with only five defensemen for the last half of the game. Also, he was unable to maintain control of the game as tempers flared in the third period. After a Ducks player (Malec?) crashed the net after losing the handle of the puck on a breakaway, a predictable shoving match occured near the goalmouth. Instead of clearing the ice and getting players to the penalty boxes, he allowed tempers to flare for a few minutes, resulting in a fight where both Jordin Tootoo and Casey Hankinson came off the bench to fight.
It will be interesting to see how the fans react to their next meeting on February 20th. O'Brien went out of his way to spur on the crowd, and I'm sure most in attendance will remember that.
