vs. Hamilton Bulldogs
at the Bradley Center
The Milwaukee area got dumped with about a foot of snow in the 24 hours leading up to this game, so I expected to only see a handful of core fans scattered amongst the lower bowl. To my surprise, I arrived to a rather sizeable group of people crowding the entranceway before the doors were unlocked. Turns out the new 80's rock station The Brew 97.3 has been promoting the game on the air and brought out the band Cherry Pie (a hair-metal cover band - think Def Leppard, Skid Row, Poison, etc.) to perform in the East Attrium before and after the game.
My vomit reflex was tested before the game when I read that Justin St. Pierre would be the ref. As expected, he had a role in upsetting me later in the evening. My general dislike of St. Putrid is that he has a very smug attitude. Like I've always said, referees shouldn't smile when coaches/players/fans are upset with them. He went one step further tonight by winking at the booing crowd during a stoppage in play in the third period.
I won't take anything away from Hamilton tonight. They truly came to the game ready to play and outhustled and outchecked the Admirals for much of the game.
Andrei Kostitsyn scored first for Hamilton on a nice energy-driven play that involved former Admiral Raitis Ivanans outhustling the Milwaukee defense to the puck on a dump in. Later in the period, Bryan Lundbohm scored his third goal in the last three games to tie it up on a crossing pass intended for Greg Zanon that deflected in off a Bulldog defenseman.
Vern Fiddler was a bad boy late in the first period. He was roughed up in the corner by Tomas Plekanec, losing his helmet in the process. Both players made their way to their benches as Hamilton dumped the puck into Milwaukee's zone. Vern came up behind Plekanec and swatted at his helmet in retaliation while the ref wasn't looking. On his next shift, Fiddler was attacked by Gavin Morgan, who received three minors to Vern's one.
Dallas Stars center/goon Steve Ott scored late in the second period, but Darren Haydar answered right back :35 later to tie it up.
Early in the third period, Morgan was given a gift-wrapped present by Scottie Upshall, who was playing for the first time since December 17. Upshall was bringing the puck up the ice from his own zone on a power play when he tried to pass to his right at the red line. Morgan stood directly in the path of the puck and had an uncontested breakaway and had no problem firing one past Brian Finley.
Here's where Justin St. Loser and a blind old goal judge helped determine the outcome. The Admirals began celebrating a goal when Hamilton goaltender Yann Danis gloved the puck while falling behind the goal line. The red light never came on, and Danis smartly scooted his way out of the net and held up the puck to show Justin that he stopped it. The striped shirts huddled together to talk it over and St. Stupid asked the goal judge what he thought and ruled it was not a goal.
The Admirals continued to fight back and tied it up with about five minutes left in regulation on a goal by captain Tony Hrkac.
The game went into a shootout for the first time at the Bradley Center since the good ole days of the IHL. The AHL instituted the shootout system this season to eliminate tie games. This was only the third time the team has been involved in a shootout (preseason at Chicago and Nov. 11 at San Antonio).
Leading scorer Simon Gamache used an exagerated fake move that gave him an easy goal against Danis to give the Admirals a 1-0 lead after one round. Haydar, Upshall, and Hrkac missed on three uninspiring shots and Hamilton's Corey Locke, Morgan, and James Sanford all beat Finley rather easily to win the shootout 3-1.
In the newspaper, coach Claude Noel had harsh words for the goal judge and Brian Finley. His yelling from the locker room could be heard over the rock band playing 100 feet away. The team's five game winning streak came to an end, but they at least picked up a point on second place Chicago who lost 6-2 to Cincinnati.
