With WSSP not airing the Admirals game live tonight, I listened to the Quad City webcast of tonight's game. And honestly, it was awkward. The Flames play-by-play guy saturated the broadcast with reasons why Milwaukee has a good team this year. Almost as if he was patting his audience on the head with "now, now... it's ok, we're not supposed to beat this team". However, the incredible Admirals could not make it a blowout. It turned out to be a close game.

Milwaukee took the 1-0 lead with a first period goal by Hugh Jessiman. He poked in a loose puck in the crease after a Patric Hornqvist shot. A lot of end-to-end action in the period, but it was 1-0 at the first intermission.

The second period got chippy. A pair of fights. Geoff Peters paired off with Kyle Greentree. Moments later, Scott Ford got into his obligitary bout with Pete Vandemeer. The Flames outshot the Admirals 12-5 in the middle frame, but Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead to the locker room on a Hornqvist goal... "the prettiest goal you'll ever see"... or words to that effect from the QC radio guy. Cal O'Reilly fed him the puck on a power play for the one timer.

Midway through the third period, Kris Chucko made it a 2-1 game with a power play goal. It was his 16th of the season, a career high.

Drew MacIntyre weathered the storm to earn his league leading 23rd win of the season. The Admirals get another five day rest before their next game on Friday. After this break, they will not have more than three days off in a row for the rest of the regular season.

After signing off tonight, I'm going to get my mind set on tomorrow's Super Bowl. I'm a Pittsburgh area native and a lifelong "Stillers" fan. I've got my game-time snacks and my 25-year old Terrible Towel ready. My prediction... Steelers win their 6th Super Bowl 34-27.

Friday night's game against Chicago had it all. A come-from-behind win in the final minutes of the game. A Gordie Howe Hat Trick. And two pissed off goalies.

You gotta love it when goalies get mad. They're already dysfunctional people. They choose to stand in front of 90 mph pucks every day. Most of them have nervous ticks or awkward rituals. So, it's only natural they'd be funny to watch when they're angry. Unfortunately, I didn't capture any of Pavalec's or MacIntyre's episodes with my camera. However, I did get another flying water bottle in the 10th pic below.

Man, I wish I didn't have to wake up to go to work in five hours. I would love to recount every detail this AWESOME!!!! 5-4 win over the Chicago Wolves Friday night at the Bradley Center.

Tied 2-2 after two periods, Patrick Hornqvist scored to briefly give the Admirals a 3-2 lead. Chicago's Brett Sterling tied it up a few minutes later. With just over 6 minutes left in the game, the Wolves deflated the home crowd with a go-ahead goal.

Enter an unlikely hero. Kelsey F'n Wilson!! He scored twice in 37 seconds to give Milwaukee a huge win over our neighbors to the south.

I'll post photos of the game while I'm listening to Saturday night's game in Moline.

The Admirals five day All Star break ends on Friday. So, I took a look at the league standings to get my bearings again as we begin a very busy 10 week stretch run. In doing so, I came to realize that only 5 of the 15 Western Conference teams have a true winning record. And by winning record, I mean winning more than half of the games.

As of Thursday...

Manitoba

32 of 47

.681

Milwaukee

29 of 45

.644

Grand Rapids

28 of 46

.609

Hamilton

28 of 46

.609

Peoria

23 of 45

.511

Rockford sits at .500 (Update - The IceHogs won Thursday night to go over .500)
Every other Western team has lost more than half of their games.

If the season ended now, Peoria would miss the playoffs because other teams with losing records have several more points from overtime and shootout losses. Houston (21 of 47) would make the playoffs from earning a point in 8 losing games.

The Eastern Conference has 8 of 14 teams with a winning record, with five of them coming from the East Division. Hartford, like Rockford, has a .500 record. Philadelphia (26 of 47) would miss the playoffs in the East.

I'm not in favor of rewarding losers. Because of the points format, a few teams with a losing record could make the playoffs while a few winning teams could be done after 80 games.

I went to a car show at Chicago's McCormick Place on Sunday. It featured hundreds of sweet cars, trucks, and motorcycles, including the Batmobile, the original KITT, and the Monkee's GTO.

Also seen at the show was a Late Model race car sponsored by the Chicago Wolves. It's driven by former AHL and IHL linesman Stephen Campbell. Over the last few years, I've seen Campbell race at Grundy County Speedway, Rockford Speedway, and Illiana Motor Speedway. He's a class act.

25 January 2009

Sorry folks. I didn't update today like I mentioned in the previous entry. I spent the day in Chicago at a car show and did the touristy thing downtown. I hope to get caught up with the site on Monday.

Quick notes-

- The Admirals stained the Bradley Center ice a dark shade of brown on Friday. They stunk it up like a crowded cow barn, which was fitting for the postgame country music concert.

- Milwaukee rebounded with a 4-2 win over 2nd place Rockford on Saturday.

- Time Warner 32 screwed up the AHL All Star Skills broadcast. The first 20 minutes or so of the broadcast had the sound but showed different video (ESPN News). So, I changed my DVR to record Monday's All Star Game on NHL Center Ice instead of TW32. I won't get the Milwaukee commercials, but I'll get a more reliable broadcast. Time Warner customers in Kenosha can also watch a delayed broadcast on Comcast Sports 49 at 7pm (Monday), 2am, and 2:30pm (Tuesday).

23 January 2009

One quick news note before I leave for tonight's game. Former Milwaukee Admiral Brandon Segal (2003-07) was named as a replacement for the AHL All Star Game on Monday. He has 12 goals in 35 games with the Norfolk Admirals.

It's unlikely I will add anything to the site until Sunday morning. With the postgame concert and my 5am alarm, I will probably be going right back to sleep after work Saturday afternoon. Yeehaw.

No Frosty For Me!!

Last night, the Admirals scored four goals, which made our ticket stubs worth a free Frosty from Wendy's. The promotion is in it's second season, so you would think the area's restaurants would be well aware of it. Unfortunately, they are not.

I'm not a dentist, but I have to attempt to pull teeth whenever I offer to trade in my special ticket stub at any of the four Kenosha Wendy's locations.

The cashiers are never aware, and so they have to grab the manager on duty. Half the time the managers have no clue, but they usually go ahead and take my word for it.

This evening, I was ready to get a Frosty along with a full dinner - chili and a couple of "double stacks". Instead I took my business to Culver's. Their Southwest Cheddar Burger (available for a limited time) was better than anything on the Wendy's menu.

For a team that loses so much (27 of 43 games), you would think the Quad City Flames would be used to it. Instead, they pouted like Sore Losers as Tuesday's game against Milwaukee wound down.

The game was tightly contested for the first two periods. Milwaukee's Hugh Jessiman scored a power play goal on a long shot from just inside the blue line on a first period power play. Other than that, neither team managed many quality scoring chances.

The Admirals looked like a different team after the second intermission. They skated harder, hit harder, and created some action in front of the Flames net. Eventually, those efforts paid off as Ryan Jones one-timed a nice pass from Patric Hornqvist at the 13:47 mark of the third period to make it a 2-0 game.

Jessiman scored his second of the night with just under three minutes left in the contest, when the puck came to him as he skated in from the left side towards a wide open net. Quad City tempers flared as the Admirals celebrated, but referee Chris Brown did nothing to control the game. He did not call a single minor penalty in the third period, despite the rather chippy play from both teams late in the game.

Soon after the ensuing faceoff, Scott Ford and Peter Vandermeer dropped the mitts in their second bout in the last two games. Vandermeer certainly has more of a goon reputation than Ford, but Scott held his own in both fights.

Quad City pulled goaltender Leland Irving with a few minutes left, allowing Jessiman to earn his first career hat trick with an empty netter in the final minute. It was the first Admirals hat trick since March 10, 2007, by Chris Durno, who had two within a month of each other. Final score 4-0. A Frosty © Four.

Drew MacIntyre stopped all 32 shots that he faced for his third shutout of the season. He now has 20 wins, two more than any other goaltender in the league. The Admirals keep an 11 point lead in the division and reclaim the best record in the conference.

Nashville Predators head coach Barry Trotz was at the game. I bit my tongue as I passed him in the concourse. I'm guessing he wouldn't have liked what I would have said to him.

And I didn't sit near any Negative Nancy's tonight, but I did get a beer spilt all over me just before the opening faceoff. The clutz who did it didn't bother to apologize. This happens to me about once a year. And considering that I do not have anyone behind me at many games, the rate that it happens is pretty ridiculous. I wish the BC would invest in sippy cups.

It wasn't that long ago when the idea of cheerleaders at hockey games was widely scoffed at. Hockey purists felt they only belonged on the football field or basketball court.

Over the last six or seven years, more and more hockey teams are using an ensemble of girls in their game day presentation. Some are cheerleaders. Some are dance teams. While others, like Milwaukee's Skeleton Krew, participate in a variety of gameday promotions - throwing out T-shirts, preparing contests, and clearing the snow from the rink during timeouts.

The Admirals had a short-lived dance crew - the Ice Angels. They were ok, I guess. I didn't sit on the edge of my seat waiting for their routine, but they didn't bother me. When they signed autographs, they attracted a crowd, so they had support from the fans. I have no idea whey they are no longer around.

Whether or not cheerleaders, dance crews, or ice girls sell more tickets can be debated, but I'm certainly not going to complain about this trend in professional ice hockey.

So, with the cold weather we've put up with this week, I'll try to warm your soul with a partial list of the different girl groups in the AHL and NHL. Enjoy!

18 January 2009

I've got a few things to complain about tonight's game. Mostly off the ice stuff.

Before I unload on that, congrats to Chris Durno for making his NHL debut tonight in Colorado. He is yet another success story of a guy who came to Milwaukee on an AHL contract and worked his butt off to get to the Big Show. He was one of my favorites while he was here, and it was hard to see him play against Milwaukee in recent years... but it's still great to see him realize a dream.

All right. Time to crack my knuckles and let off some steam...

I've had many issues with the Bradley Center over the years. Many of which I've addressed on this site, and some that I've pretty much kept to myself. Today, I feel like unloading one of those that I've been quiet about.

A few things you need to know to set up the story. I park west of the building. I do not have season tickets, even though I rarely miss a game. There are several reasons why, but explaining it would get me way off track. I buy my tickets at the BC ticket window - sometimes in advance, but usually on gameday.

Tonight was the fourth largest crowd of the season, yet the Bradley Center did not staff the ticket window at the southwest corner of the building. It's not uncommon to find that window closed when I arrive. Like I said, it's a problem I've dealt with for years.

Because it wasn't open, I had to make the long walk to the opposite corner of the building... past the group of asshole scalpers... where I found three open ticket windows at the northeast corner, with no more than one customer at a given window. After buying my ticket, I entered the doors to find not one... not two... but three staffed windows at Will Call. That's SIX employees at that corner of the building and ZERO on the opposite end.

I'm not the only person inconvenienced by this. Over the years, I've seen many people come in through the southwest entrance before the turnstiles open and wonder where the ticket window is... only to be told they have to walk completely around the building. And many of those people can be seen shaking their heads as they walk out. Especially if it's a cold night.

And even though I do not use it, the Bradley Center's own parking garage is on the west side of the building. What's the incentive to park there if you cannot buy a ticket at either of those entrances?? Myself, I like to park within site of the police station to reduce the chances of my car being fucked with while I'm inside enjoying a hockey game. And knock on wood, I've never had a problem.

My second problem tonight. Another ongoing problem. It's about a cancer that is spreading at games. "Fans" who spend the whole night bitching and complaining.

I could understand if we had a club like Springfield or Albany, who rarely even make the playoffs... but dammit, we are among the best in the league this year and have had several strong teams in recent years. And because I do not have season tickets, I hear it from several different parts of the building.

Tonight, I sat in front of a teenage kid who quickly annoyed me. I think he liked to hear himself talk, because he did a lot of it. Before the game, he carried on about seeing many Florida Panthers games (big deal). He also mentioned he had not been to an Admirals game since the 2005 playoffs.

From the opening shift, he rattled off a list of criticisms about the Admirals. Yes, the team had a stinker of a game, but to hear him lay down his judgement of the team moments after the opening faceoff really got to me. I snapped. I turned around and told him the team had the best record in the league, and I didn't want to hear his negativity all night.

I don't snap at other fans that often. I feel obligated to do what I can to make the games enjoyable for new fans to make them regular fans. As the period went on, I felt a little bad about snapping at the kid and planned on apologizing in the first intermission.... that was until he started carrying on about the score of the NFC Championship Game, which I was recording at home. My plan for the night was to avoid looking at the scoreboard and to enjoy the football games this evening without having a clue of who won. So, instead of apologizing, I found another seat in an open area far away from him for the remainder of the night.

But like I said, he's not the only one. There are some regular idiot fans who complain night after night. One particularly loud idiot in 212 or 213. I heard him from across the rink tonight... but I've never heard him say good things real loud. I think he is yet another person who likes to hear himself talk... in this case talk real loud and real negatively.

Well, after all that, I'm not in the mood to disect tonight's game. 5-2 loss to Quad City. The Flames had a few dozen people from their booster club in attendance. The two teams faceoff again Tuesday night.

And before I sign off... WTF Andreas. Nice play on the empty netter. Loose puck heading into your zone, and you had no hustle as the QC player smoked you to get to the puck and bury the Ads slim hopes at a comeback. Yes, Milwaukee would probably still have lost if that goal never happened, but it's not unheard of to score twice in one minute.

(Yes, I realize I'm complaining about negative people in what is without a doubt my most negative post of the season. There was no other way for me to deal with it.)

The top two teams in the division squared off Saturday night in Des Moines. Earlier in the day, the Nashville Predators sent defenseman Alexander Sulzer to join the Admirals for this game, but his plane had mechanical problems preventing him from making it on time. He should be ready for Sunday afternoon's game at the Bradley Center.

Milwaukee did see the return of defenseman Nolan Yonkman, who had missed the last 10 games after being injured in a fight. Stephen Werner was scratched from the lineup to make room for the return of Yonkman.

Mark Dekanich started between the pipes for the Admirals, and as I was typing up praise for him (see previous post), he was injured and left the game just five minutes into the contest. Iowa's Ryan Dingle and Milwaukee's Scott Ford crashed into Dekanich on the play. Trainer Doug Agnew spent several minutes in the locker room tending to Dekanich during the first period. Drew MacIntyre came off the bench in relief.

Jed Ortmeyer scored later in the period to give Milwaukee the initial lead of the game. Cal O'Reilly fed him the puck from behind the net. Jed one-timed it past Jean-Philippe Levasseur to end a 121:37 scoreless drought by the Admirals.

The game dragged along in a tightly-played defensive struggle until Tim Ramholt scored in the final minute of the second period to give the Admirals a 2-0 lead. Patric Hornqvist fed him a pass to the slot from behind the net. Mark Santorelli got his first pro assist on the play. It was Ramholt's second goal of the season.

Iowa's Petteri Wirtanen deflected a shot into the net to make it a 2-1 game on a power play just minutes into the third period.

The game dragged along again until Cody Franson was sent to the box with 1:12 left in regulation to give Iowa a prime chance to tie it up. The Chops pulled their goalie and put an extra skater on the ice for a 6-on-4 advantage, but the Admirals weathered the storm to take the win. and yes, I'll say it again... they beat the Meat (and high-fived afterwards!)

With the win, Milwaukee reassumes the best record in the league (.707) and takes an 11 point lead in the division. The Admirals are 5-1 against the Chops this season.

Mid-Season Report Card

40 games down. 40 to go.

There's plenty to smile about for Admiral fans this season. Now is a good time to grade the team as they begin the second half of the season.

Goal Scoring - B-
Let's face it. You can't win unless you can put the biscuit in the basket on a regular basis. The Admirals do well in this area, but they are not among the league leaders in goals per game. The team's top goal scorer, Mark Santorelli, is ranked 43rd in the league. What I do really like is that the team has several depth players who can contribute when the team's top scorers are shut down.

Defense - A+
They lead the league in fewest goals against, and they are second in the league in penalty killing percentage. The Admirals do a great job of forcing the other team to take low percentage shots. Coach Lambert often talks about "systems" in his game plan, and they are working very well on the defensive end. Their neutral zone scheme has been executed without many turnovers, thus cutting down on breakaways by the other team.

Goaltending - A+
When the season began, everyone knew what we were getting with Drew MacIntyre. A solid veteran and proven All Star. No one knew how Mark Dekanich would fare. We hoped he would be able to hang in there and not melt down too often. Well, Dex has exceeded my expectations by far. He's top 5 in the league in goals against average and save percentage. MacIntyre isn't far behind him in those rankings. We have one of the best goalie tandems in the league.

Overall - A
Leading the division by 9 points. On pace for a 112 point season. It really is hard to nit-pick. Yeah, it would be nice to see a more explosive offense, but I'll take a successful season however it comes... either with a bunch of 2-1 games or 6-5 games.

I got a message this afternoon from Eric Kent. He wrote to let me know my site was mentioned on an Admirals blog that he works on. I was unaware of the blog and quickly checked it out. The blog's posts are written by Eric and Ryan Miller, who works at Admiral games as one of the game day hosts (the guy who does it when Meg McKenzie is off).

I've read over several recent posts, and I like it. Witty. Funny. Sarcastic. And most of all informative. I'll certainly be stopping back for more. Click on the graphic below to check it out!

15 January 2009

After work today, my plan was to get completely caught up on clearing out my DVR of past hockey games. I record every game of my two favorite NHL teams - the Predators and Penguins. The games stacked up on me this past weekend, so I've been slowly chipping away at getting caught up.

I'm watching Nashville's most recent game against Toronto on Tuesday night. In the second intermission, I discovered that former Admirals captain Marc Moro is an analyst for the Toronto Maple Leafs pregame and intermission coverage on LeafsTV. Marc spent the last 5 1/4 seasons of his career in the Maple Leafs minor league system with the St. John's Maple Leafs and the Toronto Marlies. He retired after the 2006-07 season.

Marc played in Milwaukee from 1998-2002. At that time, I sat in what was a rowdy section 206 - in the south end to the right of the goal. I sat with Jay, a friend that I made at the games. The fans in that section loved the style of play that Moro brought to each game. Tough, hard-nosed defensive play... and a heckuva fighter. Someone in our group coined Marc with the nickname "Mad Dog". Jay made T-shirts which read "Mad Dog's Mob". We brought large plastic bones to the games and sieved the goalies with them. We were having a blast being his personal cheering section.

Marc was grateful for our support. He invited Jay and me to spend a few days at his parent's home in Toronto in January 2000. An unforgettable trip. Marc's dad Tony was a former Canadian football player and became a successful businessman. He hooked us up with great seats at a pair of Maple Leaf games during our stay. They played Washington and Ottawa at the Air Canada Centre. Both games ended in a tie, which was fitting since I didn't really care who won. We got the maximum amount of awesome NHL action from those two nights.

His parents were incredibly nice to us on that trip. It was not hard to figure out how Marc became such a nice guy. I followed Marc's career with the Leafs and Marlies, but I never bothered to look into what he was doing after he retired. He's one of several people who provide commentary during the Leafs pregame show. He briefly gives his thoughts on the current topic and hands it off to another expert. Perhaps he's being prepped for a job in the booth as a color analyst. In any case, I wish him well in his next career.

There are a handful of clips on YouTube of the Leafs pregame show. Here's a clip of him being honored at a game last season:

In the second game of a two night trip to Winnipeg, the Admirals barely had enough healthy players to fill the bench. Every available player on the road trip dressed for this game.

Milwaukee lost two players from the previous night. Alex Sulzer was called up to the NHL earlier in the day. He flew from Winnipeg to Montreal to join the Predators for a game against the Habs tomorrow night. The other casualty was more serious. Triston Grant used his face to block a shot last night and broke his jaw. I'm thinking this is the third broken jaw on the team in the last four years (John Vigilante and Kris Beech). Grant is expected to be out at least 6 weeks.

Both Milwaukee and Winnipeg are under a blanket of artic cold air this week. Temps at game time are -15 in Manitoba and a balmy +2 in Milwaukee. Tomorrow, the forecast has each city with a high of -6.

Each team went with the same goaltender they used last night - former teammates Drew MacIntyre and Corey Schneider. Schneider is leading the league in goals against average (1.44), while MacIntyre is tied for the league lead in wins (18). Former Admiral midget goalie Karl Goehring watched these two games from his booster seat on the Moose bench.

Rewind back to the 2004 Calder Cup series between Milwaukee and Wilkes Barre. A young man by the name of Michel Ouellet played on the Penguins squad that was swept by the Champs. Until this week, that was the last time he skated against the Admirals. Last night, he scored Manitoba's only goal. Tonight, he put the Moose on the board with a shorthanded goal at 7:22 of the first period. I wonder if he's using that humiliating defeat to psyche himself up for this week's games.

Milwaukee wasted a few of it's opportunities to tie it up when Patric Hornqvist killed two Milwaukee power plays by taking stupid penalties. Manitoba took a 2-0 lead midway through the second period when Raymond Sawada deflected a slap shot from the point by defenseman Mark Fistric.

Michael Grabner made it a 3-0 game with his 16th goal of the year 6:18 into the final period. Grabner made it 4-0 with an empty netter in the final moments of the game. The four goal deficit marked the worst defeat of the season for Milwaukee.

This ended a 12 game point streak by the Admirals. The last time Milwaukee failed to gain a point in the standings was December 20 in Grand Rapids.

News and Photos

A few more bullet points before tonight's game begins in Winnipeg...

- Defenseman Alexander Sulzer got his first callup to the NHL, as the Predators' Greg de Vries has a concussion and Shea Weber has a bruised foot. Earlier this week, Sulzer signed a two year contract extension with Nashville. Beginning next season, he will be on a one-way contract, meaning that it is very unlikely he will return to Milwaukee next season.

- I spent this afternoon knocking off a few recent Predator games from my DVR when I noticed the nameplate on Mike Santorelli's jersey reads "MI. SANTORELLI". Do they really believe his brother Mark will get his game together and make the team anytime soon? Then I thought about it and figured they probably saved his jersey from preseason, when both Santorelli's were in Nashville. The nameplates on Mike and Mark's Milwaukee jerseys only feature the last name.

As the Milwaukee area is experiencing an Alberta Clipper weather system bringing temperatures below zero for the next few days, it's only fitting that the Admirals are playing a pair of games in Canada against the Moose on Tuesday and Wednesday. The temperature at game time was -1 in Milwaukee and -13 in Winnipeg.

The Admirals dressed all seven healthy defensemen and scratched forwards Mark Santorelli and Ian MacKenzie. Drew MacIntyre started between the pipes against his former team.

Milwaukee scored twice in the first period. Robert Dietrich and Patric Hornqvist put the Admirals up 2-0 less than 13 minutes into the game. Both goals came from shots which deflected off of Manitoba defensemen. Milwaukee took that lead into the second period, after which the Moose turned things up a few notches and came up with several scoring opportunities in the second period. Michel Ouellet scored late in the period on a delayed penalty call to cut Milwaukee's lead in half.

The Admirals killed off a four minute power play that began just before the second intermission amd held on to their slim 2-1 lead for the rest of the game. MacIntyre made 27 saves to improve his record to 18-6-1. The Admirals were outshot for the fourth straight game.

The win gives Milwaukee the best record in the league (.718) and extends their lead in the division to 10 points with a game in hand. They improve their points streak to 9-0-3.

News

Sorry to all the loyal visitors. I'm coming off a hectic weekend without much time (or energy) to work on the site. Here's a quick bullet point list of what's happened in the last four days:

- After losing 3-2 in a shootout to Toronto on Thursday, the Admirals flew to Texas for a pair of games against San Antonio. They lost on Friday 2-1 in overtime, but came back with a 3-1 win on Saturday. Kelsey Wilson had a pair of goals in the win.

- The Admirals remain atop the division with an 8 point lead. They have an active 11 game point streak (8-0-2-1).

- At the risk of jinxing it, I've noticed the Admirals have not allowed more than one power play goal in 16 straight games. They have only allowed more than one PPG in four games this season. On the flip side, Milwaukee has failed to score more than one PPG in 8 straight games.

- Former Admiral Rich Peverley packed his bags and went to Nashville's airport for a flight to join the Admirals in Texas when he received a phone call saying he was claimed off waivers by Atlanta. He was waived by the Predators to make room for Steve Sullivan, who came off injured reserve to play for the first time in two years. It was reported that more than one NHL team made a claim for Peverley. Former Chicago Wolves coach John Anderson intends to use Peverley at center. Nashville was overstocked at center and usually used him at wing.

- Ian MacKenzie was called up from Cincinnati, but he did not see ice time this weekend.

News

- Admirals center Mike Santorelli was called up to Nashville for tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. A game between two struggling teams that are free-falling in the NHL standings.

- The AHL announced the roster of the PlanetUSA team for the All Star game. No Admirals were chosen for that team. Three Milwaukee players were chosen for the Canadian team (see below). With injuries and callups, more Milwaukee players could eventually be named to play in the game. The All Star Game will feature former Admirals Rory Fitzpatrick and Chris Minard.

- Former Admiral Shea Weber was named to the NHL All Star Game. No surprise. The hockey media have mentioned him as a Norris Trophy canidate for a few months now.

- The Admirals will attempt to set a new franchise record by winning their 11th straight home game tonight against Toronto. Between the cold weather, the BCS title game, and it being a weeknight - I'm guessing it will be a small crowd at the Bradley Center. If I didn't go to tonight's game, I'd stay home to watch my two favorite NHL teams puke all over each other. No thanks. I'll record it and fast forward through the mess when I get home.

As expected, Nashville called up a forward from Milwaukee for tonight's game against Colorado. Ryan Jones was picked from a handful of deserving Milwaukee players. Steve Sullivan is expected to return to the Predators lineup this weekend, so Jones or another player may be sent to the Admirals at that time. (Note - Ryan scored in the first period as I'm typing this up. He crashed the net and poked in a rebound.)

The American Hockey League announced the roster of the Canadian All Star team. Three Canadian Admirals were chosen for the 24 man roster. Cal O'Reilly, Mike Santorelli, and Cody Franson will make the trip to 'Wisstah Mass' for the All Star festivities on January 25-26. Santorelli and O'Reilly are among the league's leading point scorers (41 and 38 respectively). Franson is among the league scoring leaders by defensemen with 21 points. The league will announce the PlanetUSA team on Wednesday (Sulzer???).

Coach Lambert and his staff just missed being named to run the PlanetUSA team. The team with the best record after last Sunday's games get to send their staff to the All Star Game. Hershey's win on Sunday gave the Bears the best record. Milwaukee would have had the best record if Hershey would have lost that game. The defending champion's staff coaches the Canadian team.

Ian Croft is the Ed Hochuli of the AHL. (A puny version of him).

The Admirals were clinging to a 1-0 lead in the final minutes of Saturday night's game against Peoria when Charles Linglet appeared to tie it up with 1:18 left in regulation. But wait! The referee waived it off, as he blew the play dead just before the puck crossed the line. He thought Milwaukee goaltender Drew MacIntyre had covered the puck as it pinballed around in the crease.

Cal O'Reilly added an empty net goal moments later to make the final score 2-0. It marked the Admirals 10th straight home win, tying a team record set in 1992. The shutout was the team's second of the year, both by Drew MacIntyre. The Admirals own an 8 point lead in the division. One point separates 2nd - 6th place.

Milwaukee remains one point behind Hershey for the best record in the league. If Hershey loses in regulation Sunday to Worcester, then Lane Lambert and his staff will get to coach in the All Star game.

The Admirals got on the scoreboard in the second period, when Cal O'Reilly fed defenseman Scott Ford on a breakaway after coming out of the penalty box. He backhanded the puck over Chris Holt to send the 12,444 fans in attendance to their feet.

Both teams ended a stretch of 7 games in 9 nights. Milwaukee went 6-0-1 and Peoria 2-4-1. The Admirals get a well deserved four day rest before hosting Toronto on Thursday.

Thousands of Girl Scouts were in attendance, and Disney actress Meaghan Martin signed autographs for two hours in the largest crowd since January 5, 2008, when the Goo Goo Dolls performed after the game.

Milwaukee's six game winning streak ended Friday night in Moline in a 2-1 overtime loss. The loss was also ended a six game streak of winning games beyond regulation. On the season, the Admirals are now 6-2 when tied after three periods.

Patric Hornqvist gave the Admirals a 1-0 lead late in the first period with a power play goal. Kyle Greentree tied it up in the first shift of the second period. Greentree had a chance to get a go-ahead goal when awarded a penalty shot a few mintues later, but Mark Dekanich gloved his shot.

Dekanich stood on his head and kept the Admirals in the game, despite being outshot 34-23 in regulation. Alexander Sulzer was sent to the penalty box in the final few seconds of the third period, giving the Flames a power play in overtime. Anders Eriksson scored on the 4-on-3 advantage to give Quad City the win.

The American Hockey League named Milwaukee center Mike Santorelli the Player of the Month for December. He scored 8 goals and 15 assists in the month, in which he also tied a league season high 14 game point streak. He is tied for 2nd in the league in scoring with 40 points, one behind Hershey's Keith Aucoin.

Milwaukee called up goaltender Scott Fankhouser from Bloomington (IHL). Drew MacIntyre stayed in Milwaukee as his wife is overdue to give birth to their child. Fankhouser is a journeyman who played against Milwaukee with the Orlando Solar Bears (1999-01). He played 23 games in the NHL with Atlanta.
